last night, upon finishing a chapter of Claire Tomalin's Jane Austen, i closed my book and watched, with bated breath, the australian open men-single semis, which was between serbian 3rd seeded novac djokovic (the djoker) and top seeded, roger federer (the king). horror of horror (or was it rather anticipiated), djoker dethroned the king, in straights sets 7-5 6-3 7-6 (7-5).
my man and i consider ourselves federer aficiandos - but we made an observation; so far, Djoker had not dropped a single set the entire tournament. federer, however, had been stretched into playing 2, 5 set matches to finally sneak a spot at this semi. to that, my man switched camp! i, on the other hand, couldn't decide - i hope to see federer win, for if he does wins this open, inspite of his initial struggles with his health and his lack of usual top form coming into the tournament, he would truly be worthy to reign as the all time KING of the tennis world!
BUT..
the devil me, also wanted Djoker to win. he's excellent form and performance, at this tournament merits him a win for this round and ultimately, the tournament title. his final show-down will be against French unseeded jo-wilfried tsonga, another giant-killer. tsonga's semi-final clash with the 2nd seeded nadal was exhilariting and thoroughly satisfying to watch. tsonga effortlessly overpowered the spaniard! which was like, wow!
come to think of it, australian open 08 is full of upsets. i am happy for these giant killers while at the same time feel bad for the demoted high rankers. roddick, nadal, safin, hewitt, the william sisters, jankovic, henin, mauresmo - one by one left for the dumps! their throphy hopes snuffed like a candle in the wind, by little-known lower ranking , at times, unseeded wet behind the ears championship hopefuls!
secretly, i hope that sharapova is finally shrieked out by Invanic....just between you and me, i am not a great fan of hers...
